All Eyes on Colorado

You have a unique opportunity right now to pass legislation banning the use of seclusion rooms in your state. We hope you will do whatever you can to ensure the passage of the Prohibit Student Seclusion bill (HB 24-1167) to ban the use of solitary confinement in schools and provide educators with more resources. The bill will be voted on by the House Education Committee soon. You can email the members of the Committee here. You can read our testimony here. And, be sure to let your local officials know that you support the Prohibit Student Seclusion bill.  With just a few clicks, you can send your representatives a message through our Take Action page. We’ve been airing the above TV ad in Colorado…together, we can make this happen.

Restraint, seclusion, and corporal punishment are a national problem

At Lives in the Balance, we’re heightening awareness of the prevalence of and harm done by these practices. The TV ad above — which has aired on national TV on programs such as 60 Minutes and Morning Joe — is one example of our public awareness efforts. But we don’t just call attention to these practices (and other punitive, exclusionary practices like detention, suspension, expulsion, detentions, and police referrals), we also help schools and facilities implement an evidence-based model of care called Collaborative & Proactive Solutions that has been shown to dramatically reduce or eliminate these practices. You can learn more about us and our efforts by clicking on any of the boxes below. And you’re more than welcome to join in on and support those efforts.
